About us

Pink Crab is a team of software engineers and developers based in Nottingham. We build, secure and speed up WordPress sites, and we look after them once they are live.

This site is the check we would run by hand, made into a service. You give us a web address and we test the site from the outside, the way a visitor, a search engine, a screen reader user or an attacker meets it. Then we explain what we found in plain English: what it is, why it matters and what to do about it.

What you get

Two reports
Free summaryA short set of checks on the address you give us

Need a hand with a WordPress site? We design and build new sites, add features, connect the services you rely on, take out the plugins and code slowing a site down, and look after sites once they are live. Tell us a little about the work and we will get back to you.

    About the scan

These are the tools and services behind the checks, and what each one is for. The first ten we run ourselves; the rest are outside services we ask.

    The tools we use

    25 tools
PinkCrab Site EyesA real Chromium browser. It loads your pages the way a visitor’s browser does, so we can time them, see everything they load, test them for accessibility and watch what your cookie notice does.
PinkCrab Screen ReaderRuns Apple VoiceOver on a Mac and records it reading your page, so you can hear what a blind visitor hears.
PinkCrab Karkinos (AI)An AI model on our own hardware. It reads the first 400 words of your page to show what an AI understands your page to be about.
Plugin version toolCompares the plugin and theme files your page loads with every official release, to work out which versions your site runs.
SearXNGA search service we host. It searches for your business name, your address and your search terms, to see where your site appears.
Google LighthouseRun on our own server, for its search engine and accessibility audits of your page.
axe-coreThe accessibility engine that checks the rules a machine can decide, such as images with no description.

Cookie notice rulesOur copies of the Consent-O-Matic and DuckDuckGo autoconsent rules, to find and press the buttons on your cookie notice.
Threat listsOur copies of Feodo Tracker, Spamhaus DROP, the Tor exit list and Emerging Threats, to check your servers against addresses known to be used by criminals. Nothing about your site is sent to them.

Shodan InternetDBWhich ports on your servers are open to the internet.
GreyNoiseWhether your server has been seen scanning the internet, which can mean it has been taken over.
Quad9 and Cloudflare’s malware filterWhether these widely used services stop visitors reaching your site.
crt.shThe public certificate logs, to find your subdomains and any left pointing at a service that no longer exists.
Cloudflare and Google public DNSTo check your domain is signed with DNSSEC.
Your cookie toolCookiebot, OneTrust, CookieYes, Usercentrics or Termly, when your site uses one, for the cookie list it publishes for your site.
    Where AI is used

In two areas: 03 Security and vulnerabilities, and 05 AI search.

The vulnerability scannerUses AI to probe your site for weaknesses, in 03 Security and vulnerabilities.
PinkCrab Karkinos (AI)Reads the first 400 words of your page and says what it understands the page to be about. That text never leaves our servers.
PerplexityAsked questions a customer might ask, to see whether its answers cite your site.

Every other check is measured, not guessed: your pages are fetched and loaded, things are counted, files are compared with the official releases, and results are matched against published lists and standards.
